About Playa del Postiguet
Playa del Postiguet is the central beach of Alicante, snug between the port and Monte Benacantil. It has about 900 metres of light sand, which widens towards the La Albufereta neighbourhood, and generally calm, shallow waters.
The name comes from a small gate in the old wall, the postigo, which gave access to the beach. In summer the beach has lifeguards, showers, kiosks and volleyball areas. The Paseo de Gomiz, the promenade along the sand, has palm trees, bars and rice restaurants.
In the middle of the beach on the city side is the entrance to the tunnel for the elevator that goes up to Castillo de Santa Bárbara. From the sand you can see the profile known as the Cara del Moro on the rock of the hill.
Because it is in the centre, the Postiguet fills up on summer weekends. Those who prefer a wider beach usually go to San Juan, about 7 km away, by TRAM.
