About MACA Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante
The MACA, Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art, occupies the Casa de la Asegurada, a 1685 building constructed as a public wheat warehouse, the city’s oldest civil building. It stands on Plaza de Santa María, next to the basilica, and received a modern extension in 2011.
The core of the collection is the donation from Alicantine artist Eusebio Sempere, who in the 1970s assembled works by friends and 20th-century masters. There are pieces by Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Juan Gris, Kandinsky, Chagall, Giacometti, Bacon, Chillida, Tàpies and Saura.
The museum also has rooms dedicated to Sempere himself, known for optical and kinetic art, and to other regional artists, such as the painter Juana Francés. Temporary exhibitions occupy the new floor.
The old stone building, with a baroque portal, contrasts with the new part, which faces the street at the back.
