About Explanada de España
The Explanada de España is Alicante's best-known promenade, by the port, between the Puerta del Mar and Parque de Canalejas. The promenade was opened in the 19th century, when the wall separating the city from the sea was torn down, and took its current form in the 1950s renovation.
The pavement is a mosaic, with about 6.5 million pieces of red, black and cream marble forming waves, and stretches for around 500 meters. Four rows of palm trees provide shade over benches and kiosks. In the middle is a bandstand, where the municipal band usually plays on Sundays.
On the city side there are early 20th-century buildings, like Casa Carbonell, with domes, cafés and ice-cream shops. On the sea side, the marina, the schooners for tours and the boats that go to Tabarca. At one end begins the beach of Postiguet.
At night the Explanada often hosts craft fairs and is where locals take their walks.
