About Terra dos Dinos

Terra dos Dinos is in Governador Portela, district of Miguel Pereira, in the southern serra fluminense, about two hours from Rio de Janeiro. It occupies a forest reserve of about 1.5 million square meters, and the visit mixes trails among life-size dinosaurs with adventure attractions.

The Trilha dos Dinos is the centerpiece of the visit. There are more than 40 replicas distributed in three areas, one for each period: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. The highlight is the Argentinosaurus, over 30 meters long. Along the way there is a cave, bridges and signs that explain how the animals lived in each era. In the excavation site, children search for fossils in the sand.

For those wanting more action, the Trilha Suspensa has over 200 meters of walkways among the trees, up to 10 meters high. The zipline is about 300 meters; small children ride accompanied. The Mega Trenó is a mountain sled on rails, with a 1.2 km course descending the slope: each cart has a brake, and the rider controls the speed, which can reach 50 km/h.

The park has a themed restaurant and snack bars. The trails have ups and downs, and some adventure attractions have their own height, weight and age rules, posted at each entrance.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

A full day, especially for those who will do the trail, the zipline and the sled. The Trilha dos Dinos alone takes between 2 and 3 hours.

Best time

Open year-round. The serra is cooler than Rio: from May to August mornings are chilly, and from December to March it rains more, with afternoon showers that can suspend adventure attractions. The park usually closes one day a week for maintenance: check the calendar before you go.

How to get there

It is on RJ-125 (Rodovia Ary Schiavo), in Governador Portela, district of Miguel Pereira. From Rio de Janeiro it is about a 2-hour drive via Avenida Brasil and BR-116 to the serra, then continuing on RJ-125. The park has parking. Without a car, the option is a bus from Rio to Miguel Pereira and a taxi to the park.

Tip

Go with sneakers and comfortable clothing: the trails are dirt and uneven. Bring insect repellent and a light jacket, because the forest is humid and cool. Save the sled and the zipline for after the Trilha dos Dinos, when the children have already seen the dinosaurs and still have energy.
