The Vale do Café brings together municipalities of Rio de Janeiro state shaped by 19th-century plantations, the railway and the transformations of the Paraíba valley. Manor houses, churches, domestic collections and old rural estates help to understand the wealth produced by coffee and the labor of the enslaved people who sustained it. History also appears in places linked to Black resistance.
The region offers different experiences: museums and squares in urban centers, serestas in Conservatória, musical collections, visits to fazendas and landscapes of hills covered in vegetation. Not every fazenda accepts visitors without a reservation. Choosing a few hubs and organizing transfers prevents turning each day into a string of roads. The industrial towns add another layer to the trip, with workers’ heritage, public architecture and cultural facilities.
The regional route combines the cores of the Vale do Café with the landscape of Rio Claro. The trip can be split into stages; visiting all municipalities requires more time than a weekend getaway.
This destination brings together 13 cities: Paracambi, Engenheiro Paulo de Frontin, Mendes, Vassouras, Miguel Pereira, Paty do Alferes, Rio das Flores, Valença, Barra do Piraí, Pinheiral, Volta Redonda, Barra Mansa, Piraí.
