About Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen

The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen stands in front of Curacaví’s main square and is the oldest historic building in the town’s civic center. There has been a church in Curacaví since the 18th century; the temple was destroyed by earthquakes, relocated, and rebuilt several times.

The current building is neocolonial in style, with arches, inner courtyards, and a bell tower—features of the traditional rural architecture of central Chile. It was built on the site where the municipality planned the new square when the town grew and the old temple ended up far from the center, and it was blessed in 1958 by Cardinal José María Caro.

The 2010 earthquake damaged the structure, and the church was restored with support from the heritage reconstruction program of the Council of Culture and the local community. The patroness festival, honoring the Virgin of Carmen, is on July 16.

A visit pairs well with a walk around the square and the town-center shops, where the chicha and sweets houses are located.
