By train from Perth city centre, in about 30 minutes, to Fremantle station in the historic centre. By boat along the Swan River from the Barrack Street jetty. From Perth Airport by car or taxi in about 30 minutes.

One day for the prison, the market, the Round House and the harbour. With two days, add Rottnest Island, departing from the harbour.

When to go

All year round. In summer the sea breeze cools the afternoons; the market is open Friday to Sunday.

No. The historic centre is walkable and the train links Fremantle with Perth. There are city buses with free travel in the central area. If you drive, remember Australia drives on the left.
