About Shrine of Remembrance
The Shrine of Remembrance was opened in 1934 in honour of the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I, and later came to commemorate Australians from all conflicts. The granite building, inspired by ancient Greek monuments, sits on a hill beside the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Inside the sanctuary is the Stone of Remembrance, a stone bearing an inscription. The ceiling has an aperture aligned so that on 11 November, the date of the 1918 armistice, a shaft of sunlight falls on the word "Love" engraved on the stone; on other days the effect is recreated with artificial light at regular intervals.
Beneath the monument are galleries with objects, letters, photographs and stories of soldiers and nurses. From the terrace atop the building there are views down St Kilda Road to the city tower and the bay.
There is no entry fee. The Anzac Day dawn services on 25 April and the Remembrance Day ceremonies on 11 November attract large crowds.
