About Yarra Valley
The Yarra Valley is Victoria’s oldest wine region, with the first vineyards planted in 1838. It lies northeast of Melbourne along the Yarra River, amid forested hills and mountains, and is home to dozens of wineries, from family producers to larger estates.
The valley’s cool climate suits pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling wines; a French champagne house operates its Australian winery here. Many wineries welcome visitors for tastings in rooms overlooking the vineyards, and some have restaurants.
Beyond wine, the valley is known for dawn hot-air balloon flights, which are weather-dependent, for berry farms in summer and for small towns such as Yarra Glen and Healesville. The road up to Marysville passes through a forest of giant eucalyptus.
The region is crossed by cycle trails, such as the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail, built on an old railway line.
