About Jardim Botânico Nacional do Lowveld
The Lowveld National Botanical Garden was established in 1969 on the banks of the Crocodile River within Mbombela and is part of South Africa’s network of national botanical gardens. It covers about 160 hectares, mostly native forest, with a cultivated area near the entrance.
The garden is known for its collection of cycads, ancient palm-like plants, and for the African rainforest planted in a moist valley. A trail descends to the Crocodile River waterfalls and crosses the river on a suspension bridge, with views of the rocks and rapids.
More than 200 bird species have been recorded in the garden, including kingfishers and hornbills. Lizards, vervet monkeys and otters are frequently seen near the water.
For those arriving in the Lowveld, it’s a good first walk to get familiar with the trees and birds you’ll see in the Kruger.
