About Goegap Nature Reserve

Goegap Nature Reserve lies southeast of Springbok, in a landscape of granite domes and sandy plains. Created in 1966 on former grazing land, it was fenced and stocked with animals soon after. It has about 600 plant species, 45 mammal species and more than 90 bird species.

In spring, when winter rainfall is sufficient, the plains are carpeted with flowers, including daisies, vygies and bulbs; August and September are the most popular months. The rest of the year the reserve is valued for its succulents, granite and wildlife, such as Hartmann's mountain zebra, oryx, springbok and the aardwolf.

At the entrance is the Hester Malan succulent garden, with Namaqualand plants and a rock garden. From there a roughly 17 km car circuit departs, doable with a normal car, and walking trails from 2 to 17 km. Longer routes require a 4x4.

Birds include the black eagle, the Cape eagle-owl and several semi-desert species that attract birdwatchers from afar.
