About Freedom Park
Freedom Park covers about 52 hectares on Salvokop hill, opposite the Voortrekker Monument. It was created after the end of apartheid to honour those who died in the conflicts that shaped South Africa, from the colonial wars to the two world wars and the struggle against apartheid.
The heart of the park is the S'khumbuto, a memorial with a wall of engraved names, an eternal flame and a gallery of steel bamboo. Another area, the Isivivane, is a garden of stones brought from the nine provinces, conceived as a resting place for spirits. The museum, called //hapo, tells the story of South Africa and the continent from the origin of humanity in seven stages.
From the top of the hill, the view reaches central Pretoria, the UNISA university and the Voortrekker Monument on the other side of the valley. The proximity of the two monuments was intended to show two perspectives on the country's history.
Guided tours help to understand the symbols of each space.
