About Recifes de Sodwana Bay
The Sodwana Bay reefs lie a few kilometres offshore, in a band of coral that runs along the northern coast of KwaZulu‑Natal. They are the southernmost coral reefs on the African continent and are part of the iSimangaliso marine protected area.
The reefs are named for their distance from the launch point: Two Mile, Five Mile, Seven Mile, Nine Mile. Two Mile Reef is the most visited, with depths ranging from a few metres to about 18 metres, suitable for beginners and for snorkeling. The reef hosts hard and soft corals, hundreds of species of tropical fish, morays, rays and turtles.
Rubber boats launch directly from the sand, crossing the surf, which is an adventure in itself. Between October and March, whale sharks and manta rays appear with some frequency, and in winter it is common to hear and see humpback whales during the journey.
There are several dive schools in the bay, offering courses for beginners and dives for certified divers.
