About Lago Sibaya
Lake Sibaya covers about 70 km² between the coastal dunes and the Maputaland plain, roughly 25 km north of Sodwana Bay. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in South Africa and is part of iSimangaliso. Sand dunes separate it from the sea by just over a kilometre.
The clear blue water is fringed by white‑sand beaches, forest and small villages. Hippos and crocodiles live in the lake, and the shores host hundreds of bird species, such as the osprey and kingfisher.
Visits are low‑key with limited tourist infrastructure: there is a community campsite and viewpoints from which to see the lake and dunes. Guided trips depart from Sodwana Bay and include walks through the villages.
Because of hippos and crocodiles, swimming is not allowed in the lake.
