About Hermanus Cliff Path
The Cliff Path follows Hermanus’s entire coastline, from the New Harbour in the west to the Klein River mouth and the Piet-se-Bos woodland near Grotto Beach in the east. It’s about 12 km of dirt and gravel track, with benches and viewpoints along the cliffs. It was opened by the town’s botanical society and is part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
In season, from July to November, southern right whales often enter Walker Bay and swim close to the rocks, and the path becomes a natural grandstand. The most popular spots lie between Gearing's Point in town and Roman Rock, as well as Sievers Punt and Kwaaiwater further east.
Out of season, the path is worth it for the rugged coastline, the tidal pools, the dassies sunning themselves on the rocks and the fynbos in bloom. In the central section you’ll find the Old Harbour and a row of restaurants overlooking the bay.
You don’t have to do it all: many people walk from the Old Harbour eastwards 3 or 4 km and return the same way.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
From 1 hour for a short section to 4 hours for the full path.
Best time
From July to November for the whales, with higher sightings in September and October. Early morning and late afternoon seas are usually calmer, which makes animals easier to spot.
How to get there
The path goes through Hermanus town centre; you can enter on foot at the Old Harbour, the New Harbour or any of the access points along the coast.
Tip
Bring binoculars and a hat: there’s little shade. Listen for the kelp horn of the whale spotter, which signals where the whales are.
