Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

The southern right whale season in Walker Bay runs from July to November, with more sightings in September and October when the Hermanus Whale Festival takes place. Great white shark boats operate year-round, with more encounters often in winter. Summer, from December to February, is beach season, with strong southeasterly winds.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Two days cover Hermanus and a trip to Gansbaai. With three days you can include Cape Agulhas, about 2 hours from Hermanus. Those who only want to see the whales can do a day trip from Cape Town, but the round trip is about four hours of driving.

Which city to stay in

Hermanus is the most complete base, with the historic centre near the Old Harbour and many guesthouses along the cliffs; Voëlklip to the east is close to Grotto Beach. For shark boats, De Kelders and Gansbaai operate from the nearby Kleinbaai harbour. In L'Agulhas and neighbouring Struisbaai there are cottages and beach houses for those who want to stay at the tip of the continent.
