About Grotto Beach
Grotto Beach is in the Voëlklip neighbourhood, east of Hermanus town centre, and is the town's main beach. The strip of fine white sand stretches for several kilometres to the mouth of the Klein River, where the lagoon meets the sea, and continues along the wild Die Plaat beach in the Walker Bay reserve.
The water of Walker Bay is cold, but in summer the beach fills with families. There are lifeguards in season, parking and a restaurant on the sand. Behind the beach are dunes and the milkwood grove of Piet-se-Bos, where the Cliff Path ends.
The beach is wide and good for long walks, and during whale season it is common to see them from the sand.
On the west side, the small Voëlklip Beach, among rocks, is popular with surfers.
