About Museo Judío de Sosúa
In 1938, at an international conference on Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany, the Dominican Republic was one of the few countries to offer refuge. From 1940, a few hundred families arrived in Sosúa, then an old banana farm, to form an agricultural colony with land, cattle and cooperatives.
The museum, next to the still-active synagogue, tells that story with photographs, documents, personal items, letters and the records of the dairy and cold-cut cooperative the settlers founded, which made the town famous. It also shows how the community integrated into the country, with marriages and families that stayed.
Many settlers later moved to other countries, but Sosúa still preserves the street names, the synagogue and the colony’s cemetery. The visit is short and gives another dimension to the beach town.
