About Teleférico de Puerto Plata e Loma Isabel de Torres
The Puerto Plata cable car opened in 1975 and for decades was the only one in the Caribbean. The cabin rises from the foot of the mountain in the Los Domínguez neighborhood to near the summit of Loma Isabel de Torres, about 790 meters above sea level, in a few-minute trip over the forest. From the top the view covers the city, the port, Fortaleza San Felipe and the coast as far as Sosúa.
At the summit there is a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, smaller than the original, arms outstretched over the city. Around it, a botanical garden with trails, a lake, tropical plants and orchids occupies the mountain top, which is part of a protected area, the Isabel de Torres Natural Monument.
There is also a café and craft shops. The mountain often becomes cloud-covered from mid-morning, and the temperature at the top is cooler than in the city.
