About Parque Nacional El Choco (Cuevas de Cabarete)
El Choco National Park occupies the forest and lagoon area just south of Cabarete. The terrain is limestone, pierced by caverns where groundwater forms very clear freshwater lagoons. The most visited part is the Cuevas de Cabarete, with marked trails.
With a guide, the visit follows the trail through the forest and descends into the caverns by stairs and stone passages. Inside some of them you can swim in cool lagoons, with stalactites around and light entering through openings in the ceiling. There are also Taíno remains and large native trees.
The park includes surface lagoons, such as Cabarete and La Goleta, with waterfowl, and areas for horseback riding and cycling. It is a half-day outing that shows Cabarete’s green side, away from the beach winds.
