La Romana – La Romana Destination La Romana and Bayahibe Capital

How to get there

  • Aeropuerto Internacional de La Romana (LRM) 10 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Confirm before buying. La Romana Airport (LRM) is about 10 km from downtown. From Punta Cana it's roughly an hour by road; from Santo Domingo, about an hour and a half via the highway, with regular buses.

How many days

One day for Altos de Chavón and the Cueva de las Maravillas; another for Isla Catalina. Many people use La Romana as an arrival point and stay overnight in Bayahibe or Casa de Campo.

When to go

From December to April there is less rain and more cruise ships arrive. From June to November is hurricane season, with heavy showers. The Cueva de las Maravillas can be visited year-round.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

It helps to have transport, because the attractions are spread out: Altos de Chavón to the east, the Cueva de las Maravillas to the west. Without a car, use taxis or organized tours; for Isla Catalina, boats depart from the port or from Casa de Campo.
