About Santo Cerro
The Santo Cerro is a hill a few kilometers north of La Vega, from which you can see much of the Cibao valley, known to the Spanish as Vega Real. According to tradition, Christopher Columbus had a wooden cross erected there at the end of the 15th century, and the site became associated with a battle between Spaniards and Taínos and a miracle attributed to the Virgin of Mercedes.
At the summit sits the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, patron saint of the country alongside the Altagracia, with a stone church and a courtyard. Devotees point out the hole where the cross is said to have been planted, and on September 24, the feast of Las Mercedes, there is a pilgrimage.
From the viewpoint next to the church, the panorama covers the valley’s rice and cacao fields, the mountains and, at a lower spot, the ruins of La Vega Vieja. It is a short outing that combines faith, history and scenery.
