About Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, in La Vega’s center, is one of the country’s most distinctive buildings. Opened in the 1990s, it was built in exposed concrete, with geometric volumes, porticoes and towers that many say resemble the chimneys of a sugar mill or the walls of a fortress.
Inside, the space is generous, with colorful stained glass and natural light entering through high openings. The church replaced the city’s former cathedral and remains the diocesan seat, with regular masses.
In front is Parque Duarte, La Vega’s central square, surrounded by the town’s shops. During carnival the area fills with diablos cojuelos and music.
