About Pico Duarte
Pico Duarte, at 3,101 meters, is the highest mountain in the Dominican Republic and the entire Caribbean. It lies within Armando Bermúdez and José del Carmen Ramírez national parks, in the center of the Cordillera Central, an area of pine forests, river sources and high-altitude valleys.
The most used trail starts from La Ciénaga, about 25 km from Jarabacoa, and covers roughly 23 km to the summit, with a steep ascent. The route usually takes two or three days, with overnight stays in simple shelters along the way, such as La Compartición, near the summit. Mules carry baggage and food, and a guide is mandatory.
The path crosses humid forest, then pine forests and highland fields. At the top, a bust of Juan Pablo Duarte and a Dominican flag mark the highest point, with views over the mountains and, on clear days, even the sea. Nights up there are cold, near zero.
