About Parque Nacional Valle Nuevo
Parque Nacional Valle Nuevo protects a plateau of the Cordillera Central between 1,800 and over 2,300 meters altitude, south of Constanza. It is a rare landscape in the Caribbean: high-altitude grasslands, creole pines, cold-water streams and springs of some of the country’s main rivers. In winter, mornings can start with frost.
The road that crosses the park toward San José de Ocoa passes viewpoints, a small chapel and the Pirámides, a concrete monument that marks the island’s geographic center according to local tradition. Short trails lead to moss-covered valleys and viewpoints with mountain views.
The park hosts wildlife adapted to the cold, with endemic birds and plants that only exist at these elevations. There are camping areas and simple cabins at the entrance.
