About Zona Arqueológica de Cobá
Cobá was one of the largest Maya cities in the northern Yucatán Peninsula, reaching its peak between 600 and 900 CE. It occupied an extensive area among lagoons, which explains the name—often translated as waters stirred by the wind—and controlled a network of elevated stone roads, the sacbé. The longest of these runs about 100 km to Yaxuná, near Chichén Itzá.
The area open to visitors includes several groups of structures connected by jungle trails. Near the entrance is the Cobá group, with the pyramid called La Iglesia and a ballcourt. The Macanxoc group has stelae carved with images of rulers and inscriptions. The Nohoch Mul group, about 2 km from the entrance, contains the pyramid of the same name, roughly 42 meters high, one of the tallest on the peninsula.
Distances are long and paths are shaded by trees. Bicycles and pedal-taxis (triciclos) are available to rent at the entrance. Many structures remain partially covered by vegetation, giving an idea of how Maya cities were originally found.
Climbing the Nohoch Mul pyramid is often prohibited, as in other sites in the region.
