About Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo
The temple of Santa Rosa de Viterbo was completed in 1752 for a convent of nuns. On the outside, the volute-shaped buttresses, the tiled dome and the ornate tower make it one of the most original churches of Mexican Baroque.
The interior features gilded churrigueresque altarpieces, a marquetry pulpit with ivory and mother-of-pearl, and a sacristy with a portrait of Sister Ana María de San Francisco y Neve. The choir is protected by wrought-iron grilles.
The tower houses what is considered the first repeating clock in the Americas, which struck the hours twice.
A few blocks away is the temple of Santa Clara, another convent church with gilded altarpieces, and the two are often visited together.
