About Plaza de Armas e Casa de la Corregidora
The Plaza de Armas, also called Plaza de la Independencia, is a square plaza with laurels, surrounded by Baroque mansions with restaurants under the arcades. In the center stands the fountain with the statue of the marquis who built the aqueduct.
On one side is the Casa de la Corregidora, the state government's seat. In 1810 the corregidor Miguel Domínguez lived there with his wife, Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, who took part in the independence conspiracy. When the plot was discovered, she managed to warn the conspirators, prompting Father Hidalgo to accelerate the uprising.
The palace courtyard, with arcades, can be seen during office hours. Josefa Ortiz is called the Corregidora and is a national heroine.
Pedestrian promenades radiate from around the square to the rest of the center, and at night the restaurants' tables fill up.
