About Cerro de las Campanas
The Hill of the Bells is about 2 km west of downtown Querétaro. In 1867, after being besieged in Querétaro, the troops of the Second Empire surrendered, and Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg was executed on the hilltop, along with Generals Miramón and Mejía.
At the site, Austria built an expiatory chapel in 1901 in a neo-Gothic style. On the hilltop, a large statue of Benito Juárez, the president who led the republican victory, looks over the city.
The complex is an urban national park, with green areas, trails and a small museum about the siege of Querétaro and the end of the empire.
It is a peaceful outing, frequented by families on weekends.
