About Acueducto de Querétaro
The Querétaro aqueduct was built between 1726 and 1735 at the initiative of the Marqués de la Villa del Villar del Águila to bring water from the mountain springs to the Capuchin convent and the city. It has 74 pink stone arches, about 1,280 meters long and up to 23 meters high.
The arches cross Avenida Zaragoza and the La Cruz neighborhood and are the city's emblem. Water reached the public fountains in the center, some of which are still preserved.
The Arcos viewpoint, on the street that leads to the pantheon of illustrious Querétaro residents, offers the most familiar view of the aqueduct. At night the arches are lit.
Beside the viewpoint is the pantheon, where the Corregidora Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez and her husband—figures linked to the independence conspiracy—are buried.
