About Catedral de Puebla
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Puebla was built between 1575 and 1649, when it was consecrated by Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. The towers, finished in the 18th century, are about 69 meters high and are among the tallest church towers in Mexico.
The interior has 14 side chapels, the Altar of the Kings by Spanish architect Pedro García Ferrer, and a neoclassical baldachin by Manuel Tolsá at the center. The choir features wooden marquetry seats and two organs.
Legend says that as construction dragged on, angels came down at night to raise the walls, which supposedly gave the city the name Puebla de los Ángeles.
In front, the zócalo, with trees and a fountain of the archangel Saint Michael, is surrounded by arcades with cafés and restaurants.
