About Capilla del Rosario
The Chapel of the Rosary is inside the church of Santo Domingo, three blocks from the zócalo, and was consecrated in 1690. It is one of the richest works of Mexican baroque and was once called the eighth wonder of the world.
The walls, dome and arches are covered in gilded stucco with gold leaf, with angels, flowers and figures of saints, above a base of talavera tiles. At the center, a baldachin houses the image of the Virgin of the Rosary.
The decoration follows a program about divine grace, with the virtues, the gifts of the Holy Spirit and scenes from the life of Mary. The light entering through the dome makes the gold shine.
The chapel is a place of prayer, and visits are made in silence, without flash.
