About Templo de la Preciosa Sangre de Cristo
The church of the Precious Blood of Christ stands in the center of Teotitlán del Valle, in a broad atrium facing the plaza and market. It was built by the Dominicans in the 17th century on the platform of a Zapotec temple, reusing stones from the older construction.
In the walls of the atrium and façade appear carved stones with Zapotec geometric designs, the same step patterns seen in Mitla’s mosaics and in the village rugs. Behind the church part of the pre-Hispanic platform can be seen.
The interior features gilded altarpieces and mural paintings. The atrium is the focal point of the village festivals, such as the July celebration with the feather dance, in which dancers wear large feather headdresses.
Next door, the community museum displays the village’s history and the process of weaving wool. The church is used by the local community, so it is advisable to avoid service times.
