About Hierve el Agua
Hierve el Agua is located in the mountains about 25 km from Mitla, in the municipality of San Lorenzo Albarradas. The name, “the water boils,” comes from mineral springs that bubble in the rock, although the water is cold.
Over thousands of years, water rich in calcium carbonate and other minerals flowed over the cliff and formed petrified white stone cascades that look like frozen waterfalls. The largest, the Cascada Grande, is about 90 meters and can be seen from a viewpoint and from a trail that descends into the valley. The other, the Cascada Chica, is beside the pools.
At the top of the Cascada Chica are natural and artificial mineral pools at the cliff edge, with views of the mountains and the valley. Along the edges you can see irrigation channels dug by the Zapotecs more than 2,000 years ago.
The site is managed by the local communities, with an entrance fee, and it often closes at times for conservation or by community decision. Confirm before you go.
