About Catedral de Morelia
Morelia’s cathedral was built between 1660 and 1744 in pink cantera, the region’s stone, and is one of the largest in Mexico. The two towers, about 66 meters high, dominate the historic center and are visible from many parts of the city.
The baroque façade is restrained, with reliefs and columns. The interior was remodeled in the 19th century in a neoclassical style and houses a large German organ, one of the largest in the country, used in the city’s organ festival, and the image of the Señor de la Sacristía, made of corn paste.
The cathedral sits between two plazas, Plaza de Armas and Plaza Melchor Ocampo, surrounded by arcades with cafés. Opposite, the Government Palace has Alfredo Zalce murals about the history of Michoacán.
At night the cathedral is illuminated and, on Saturdays, there is usually a light show and fireworks on the towers.
