Morelia, the capital of the state of Michoacán, has a historic center of pink stone, the cantera, with more than a thousand colonial buildings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The cathedral with tall towers, the aqueduct of 253 arches and the old colleges make it one of Mexico's most harmonious colonial cities.

To the west, Lake Pátzcuaro and its villages are the heart of purépecha culture. Pátzcuaro has wide plazas and adobe houses with tiled roofs, and Janitzio Island, in the middle of the lake, is one of the country's best-known places to experience the Night of the Dead. In Tzintzuntzan, the yácatas recall the ancient capital of the purépecha kingdom.

To the east, in the mountains bordering the State of Mexico, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve receives from November to March millions of butterflies coming from Canada and the United States, which cover the trunks of pines and oyameles. The reserve has been a World Heritage Site since 2008, and Angangueo, a former mining village, is the base for visits.

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
