About Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca Sierra Chincua
Sierra Chincua is about 10 km north of Angangueo, within the same Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. It receives fewer visitors than El Rosario, and the trail is usually gentler, through a forest of oyameles and pines.
Between mid-November and March, the butterflies cluster on the tree branches, covering them in orange, and fly during sunny hours. The location of the colonies changes each year, and the walking distance varies.
Visits are guided by residents of the local communities, and there are horses for part of the route. At the entrance there are simple food stalls, with quesadillas and café de olla.
The rules are the same as in the other sanctuaries: silence, no flash, no touching the butterflies and do not leave the trail.
