About Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca El Rosario
El Rosario is located in the municipality of Ocampo, about 12 km from Angangueo, in the mountains of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site since 2008. It is the most visited sanctuary and one of those that tend to gather the most butterflies.
Between mid-November and March, millions of monarch butterflies coming from Canada and the United States cluster on the trunks and branches of the oyameles, a type of fir, covering the trees in orange. With the midday warmth they take flight in clouds.
The trail starts at the sanctuary entrance and climbs through the forest, above 3,000 meters of altitude, in about an hour, depending on where the colonies are that year. There are horses for part of the ascent. Visits are guided by residents of the reserve communities.
In the butterfly area people speak quietly, no flash is used and butterflies are neither touched nor collected, not even those fallen on the ground.
