Monterrey, capital of the state of Nuevo León, is the third largest city in Mexico and the main industrial and business center of the country’s north. It lies in a valley surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and Cerro de la Silla, with its saddle-shaped summit, is its symbol.
The downtown has the Macroplaza, one of the largest plazas in the world, featuring the Faro del Comercio, the cathedral and the Government Palace, and the Paseo Santa Lucía, a canal with promenades that leads to Parque Fundidora, a former steel plant turned into a park with museums. Barrio Antiguo concentrates 19th-century houses, bars and cafés.
On the outskirts, the mountains of Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey have canyons, caves and waterfalls. In Santiago, a Pueblo Mágico about 35 km away, the Cola de Caballo waterfall falls through the forest, and the La Boca reservoir is a weekend outing spot.
Northern cuisine includes roasted cabrito, grilled meats and flour tortillas.
This destination brings together 2 cities: Monterrey, Santiago.
