About Zona Arqueológica de Uxmal
Uxmal is about 80 km south of Mérida and was the most important city in the Puuc region, flourishing between the 7th and 10th centuries. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996 and is considered one of the most complete examples of Maya architecture from the Late Classic period, with façades covered by stone mosaics, snakes and masks of the rain god Chaac.
The best-known structure is the Pyramid of the Magician, about 35 meters high with an oval base—rare in Maya architecture. According to legend, it was raised in a single night by a dwarf with supernatural powers. Beside it is the Nunnery Quadrangle, a courtyard surrounded by four buildings with sculpted façades that the Spaniards compared to a convent.
Further south, on a high platform, the Governor's Palace has a long mosaic façade, one of the most refined in the Maya world. Nearby are the House of the Turtles, the ball court and the Great Pyramid, which allows you to view the complex from above when climbing is permitted.
Because there are no rivers in the region, the city relied on rainwater stored in cisterns, which explains the constant presence of Chaac on the façades. Climbing the Pyramid of the Magician is usually prohibited.
