About Zona Arqueológica de Kabah
Kabah is about 10 km south of Santa Elena and about 23 km from Uxmal, to which it was connected by a sacbé, an elevated stone road. It was the second most important city in the Puuc region, flourishing between the 8th and 10th centuries.
The best-known structure is the Codz Poop, the Palace of the Masks, whose west façade is covered from top to bottom with hundreds of stone masks of the rain god Chaac, with their curved, trunk-like noses. It is one of the most impressive examples of Puuc decoration.
On the other side of the road are the Arch of Kabah, which marked the start of the sacbé to Uxmal, and the Great Pyramid, still partly covered by vegetation. The Palace, next to the Codz Poop, has columns on the façade and warrior figures carved into the doorjambs.
Receiving far fewer visitors than Uxmal, Kabah is usually tranquil, and the visit is quick.
