About Malecón de Progreso
The malecón of Progreso runs alongside the city’s main beach for about 2 km, facing the Gulf of Mexico. It is a wide promenade with benches, palm trees and sculptures, and on the other side of the street are seafood restaurants, ice cream shops and stores.
The beach in front has light sand and shallow, calm, green water, where you can walk far out into the sea. It is mainly frequented by families from Mérida, who fill the sand on weekends and during summer holidays.
From the malecón you can see the Progreso pier, which extends into the sea about 6 km to the deep-water port, one of the longest in the world. Near the beach is the old wooden pier, a fishing spot, and the town’s lighthouse, from the 19th century.
At the end of the afternoon, the sunset over the sea draws locals to the promenade.
