About Gran Museo del Mundo Maya
The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is located north of Mérida, in a modern building whose shape resembles the Mayan sacred tree, the ceiba. It was inaugurated in 2012 and houses more than a thousand archaeological pieces found on the Yucatán Peninsula.
The galleries follow a route through Maya history, from the formation of the peninsula and the impact of the Chicxulub meteorite to the life of ancient cities, with stelae, sculptures, ceramics and offerings removed from the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itzá. Another section covers the Spanish conquest, the colonial era and the culture of today's Maya people, including their language, clothing and festivals.
The museum features audiovisual resources, scale models and texts in Spanish, English and Maya. At night, on some days, there is a light-and-sound show projected onto the façade.
It’s a good place to understand the context before or after visiting Uxmal, Chichén Itzá and the other sites in the region.
