About Punta Cometa
Punta Cometa is a rocky promontory that juts out into the sea at the western end of Mazunte beach, considered the southernmost point of the state of Oaxaca. A short trail climbs through dry vegetation to the summit, passing cacti and shrubs.
From the top, flat rocks form a natural viewpoint over the Pacific, with views of Mazunte and Mermejita beaches, the rocky outcrops and the open sea. In the late afternoon locals and visitors gather to watch the sun set over the ocean, and often applaud when it disappears.
During the migration season, from December to March, humpback whales are sometimes seen offshore. Dolphins and seabirds are also commonly observed.
The trail has no lighting, and the descent after sunset requires a flashlight.
