About Sótano de las Golondrinas
The Sótano de las Golondrinas is a limestone sinkhole about 15 km from Aquismón, with an opening of roughly 60 meters and a depth of more than 500 meters, one of the largest in the world. It is a protected natural monument.
Thousands of swifts and parakeets nest on the sinkhole walls. At dawn they leave in groups that fly in a spiral to the rim and then disperse into the forest. In the late afternoon they return in a dive into the sinkhole, an equally sought-after spectacle.
From the road, a staircase of about 500 steps descends through the forest to the rim, where there are protected viewing platforms. The local teenek community manages the site and requests silence during the birds' emergence.
The descent to the bottom by rope is carried out only by experienced cavers and with authorization.
