About Convento de San Bernardino de Siena
The convent of San Bernardino de Siena is located in the Sisal neighborhood, about 1.5 km from Valladolid’s main square, at the end of the Calzada de los Frades, a street of colorful houses. It was built by the Franciscans between 1552 and 1560 and is one of the oldest colonial buildings in Yucatán.
The complex looks like a fortress, with thick stone walls and a simple façade typical of mission convents in the region. Inside the church are wooden altarpieces and remnants of mural paintings. The cloister and the former courtyard enclose a cenote that supplied the friars, covered by a stone structure.
In front of the convent, a wide lawn and the Sisal neighborhood square welcome families in the late afternoon. On some nights, a light-and-sound projection tells the city’s story on the façade.
The church remains in use, and interior visits depend on worship schedules.
