About Cenote Suytun

The Suytun cenote is about 8 km east of Valladolid’s center, on the road to Cancún. It is an enclosed cave with a small opening in the ceiling and became famous for the stone walkway that extends into the water and ends on a circular platform in the middle of the underground lake.

At certain times of day, sunlight enters through the opening and forms a beam that reaches the platform, a highly photographed scene. The water is clear and shallow in parts, and the walls and ceiling are covered with stalactites.

The cenote is on private property with a restaurant and gardens. There is an entrance fee, a life jacket is mandatory for swimming, and there is often a queue for photos on the platform.

The light beam depends on the sun’s position and the time of year, and does not appear every day.
