About Punta Sur
Punta Sur is the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, a limestone promontory facing the open Caribbean. It is considered the easternmost point of Mexico’s continental territory and one of the first places in the country to receive the morning sun.
At the top of the point are the remains of a small Maya temple dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of the moon, fertility and weaving. Tradition says the Spaniards who arrived in 1517 found female offering figures on the island and thus called it Isla Mujeres. Only low walls of the temple remain at the cliff edge.
The path to the point passes an outdoor modern sculpture park and the lighthouse. From there you can see the island’s east coast, with rough sea and rocks, and on clear days the buildings of Cancún’s Hotel Zone across the bay.
Entrance to the Punta Sur area is charged separately; check at the gate.
