About Zona Arqueológica de Edzná
Edzná lies about 55 km southeast of Campeche, in a flat valley among low hills. It was inhabited for more than a thousand years, roughly from 600 BCE to 1450, with its peak between 600 and 900 CE. The name is commonly translated as house of the Itzá.
The site's centre is the Great Acropolis, a high platform topped by the Five-Storey Building, Edzná's best-known structure. It combines pyramid and palace: each storey has rooms, and the top is crowned by a temple with a roof crest. On certain dates in May and August, the setting sun's light enters the temple from above in an alignment with the sky.
Around it are the Great Plaza, the Nohochná, a long building from which ceremonies were watched, the ball court and the Temple of the Masks, with two stucco faces that would represent the rising and setting sun.
The Maya of Edzná built a network of canals and reservoirs to store rainwater, one of the oldest hydraulic systems in the region. The site receives few visitors.
