The city
San Francisco de Campeche is the capital of the state of Campeche, on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is surrounded by remains of walls and bastions built against pirates, with colorful houses, the cathedral and Independence Square. The malecón runs along the shore, and the forts of San Miguel and San José sit on the surrounding hills. About 55 km away is the Maya city of Edzná.
